ABOUT ME
Hyung Seok Park, MD, PhD
Prof. Park is a breast surgeon and surgical oncologist, currently serving as a professor in the Department of Surgery at Yonsei University College of Medicine, Severance Hospital, Breast Cancer Center & Cancer Prevention Center of Yonsei Cancer Center, and Yonsei University Health System.
As a pioneer in robotic mastectomy, he began researching the procedure using cadaveric models in 2013 and performed Asia's first human case of robotic mastectomy in 2016. He also developed a gasless robotic mastectomy technique, becoming the first to publish a paper on the human subject. Continuing his pioneering work, he performed the world's first robotic mastectomy and robotic axillary lymph node dissection using the da Vinci SP system in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Today, he actively utilizes robotic surgical systems for mastectomies and axillary lymph node dissections in patients with breast cancer or BRCA1/2 mutations. Recognized as one of the leading high-volume surgeons in South Korea, his team at Severance Hospital achieved a milestone of over 1,000 cumulative robotic mastectomies in 2025.
Beyond his clinical practice, Prof. Park actively participates in the clinical trial group of the Korean Breast Cancer Society. He also founded the Korea Robot-Endoscopy & Minimal Access Breast Surgery Study Group (KoREa-BSG) and currently serves as its chairperson. An accomplished researcher, he has published over 100 scientific articles, delivered numerous invited lectures at international conferences, and co-authored several chapters in a prominent Korean textbook on breast oncology. He has authored a definitive textbook on robotic breast surgery. His diverse research interests encompass robotic and oncoplastic breast surgery, surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery, endocrine surgery, biostatistics, preclinical models, hereditary breast & ovarian cancer syndrome, and genomics.
